Who is Ed Taylor?

Dr. Edgar C Taylor (Ed) was born and raised in Clinton, South Carolina where he attended public schools.  He is the oldest of three sons whose parents were the late Edgar and Mary Taylor.  Upon graduating from Clinton High School in 1967 he enrolled in The Citadel and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education in 1971.  This same year he also married his wife, Loren,  and they will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary this summer.

The couple has three married children and three grandchildren. Lanny, the oldest son lives in Seattle, with his wife, Diva, and works in the food industry. Cassie resides in Fountain Inn with her husband,  Barrett, and their children, Mary Ellis and Hunter.  Cassie teaches math at Laurens District High School. George is an attorney and is living in Columbia with his wife, Kendra, and daughter, Haley.

Ed has had a 40 year career in the field of education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, district administrator, and superintendent. The longest position held was Superintendent of Laurens District #55 where he was credited with passing a referendum to build an elementary school in Waterloo and adding more than 100 classrooms throughout the district. Montessori programs were added to the offerings and District 55 became the training ground for Montessori programs throughout the state.

He has been very involved in the community during the past 18 years. He attends the local Episcopal Church where he has served three terms on the Vestry including the leadership positions of both junior and senior warden. He also serves as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He and Loren became foster parents and were selected as foster parents of the year in 2009. He served two terms on the board of the local Chamber of Commerce and was Chairman of this board in 2007.  He also has served as board members of the local YMCA, the United Way, and the Laurens Rotary.

During Taylor's career he was very active in the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and was President of the Superintendent's Division during the 2007- 2008 school year. He served on and chaired several other committees over the past 30 years including the superintendent of the year selection committee, the legislative platform committee, the publications committee, and the budget committee.  One of the highlights of his career was being selected by the South Carolina School Boards Association as Superintendent of the Year in 2000.

In addition to his BS from the Citadel, he received a Masters in Counseling from the University of SC in 1975, an Ed Specialist Degree from Winthrop University in School Administration in 1985, and a Doctorate from the University of SC in Curriculum and Instruction in 1992.

His hobbies include hunting, target shooting, fishing, woodworking, travel, and reading.  He spends several hours each week exercising and weight training.

Taylor's passion is public education, and this is his primary reason for running for election to the SC House of Representatives. He has been very disappointed in the action of the legislature in recent years and believes that there is a need to ensure quality educational opportunities for all the children in our state. His other key concerns in SC politics are tax reform and the environment.
